Tourism is constantly changing with the times. If mass tourism was the last major evolution, an event as significant as Covid could not leave tourism static. So, since 2022, we can see that tourism habits are still reinventing and adapting to the era and the opportunities.

Virtual tourism as a future mode of consumerism in tourism

The first evolution of tourism might be technological. All in all, this is quite logical given the period of great digital upheaval that we are experiencing and also the successive periods of confinement that have profoundly affected the era. Armelle Solelhac, CEO of the marketing strategy agency Switch, identifies this transition as moving from mass tourism to space tourism. The goal is quite simple, to visit the world without leaving home thanks to technological innovations that are flooding the world.

Augmented reality headsets in particular are enabling this new kind of tourism. Soon you will be able to visit the world from your living room. The virtual ascent of Mont Blanc is already possible. Even though Booking.com revealed that 72% of people surveyed still wanted to travel in 2023, 43% of travellers wanted to use virtual reality to help them choose their destination and dive into what could be their future trip. Innovation therefore meets the challenges of tourism by providing an answer to a well-known problem of future travel: where to go? Beyond immersion, more than a third of those questioned expressed the desire to live a "virtual reality travel experience lasting several days". This is a good way to save money with the increase in the cost of travel and also to reduce one's carbon footprint and therefore one's impact on the environment. When virtual travel becomes green travel, we can talk about "virtuous" travel.

While tourists are certainly more willing to travel online, the physical link is important, especially for business trips. Indeed, team building and cohesion may be achieved in the metaverse in the near future, but for the time being, the physical aspect and the IRL meeting is still too deeply rooted in our culture.

Tourism is ubiquitous and more embedded in everyday life

Another trend in the evolution of tourism is its omnipresence. Tourism is everywhere (or nowhere, it's up to you). It is above all the idea of enjoying the time that goes by and of admiring what surrounds us, where the desire to take your time and to be contemplative is important. Numerous concepts emerge and move in this direction. This is the case of "slow tourism" and "micro tourism", two notions that are close and similar in the kind of tourism. Taking your time, without going very far and without necessarily going away for a long time, quite simple. This is another way of reducing your impact on the environment, since by leaving close to home you avoid excessive carbon emissions. It's also a way to enjoy the destination more than the journey by not spending hours in transport to get there.

"Bleisure" is also a form of tourism that is becoming more and more popular, encouraged by the strong democratisation of remote working. "Bleisure", as a mixture of "business" and "leisure", is about deconstructing the boundary between work and holiday. It is also described as the future of business travel, and can take the form of an extension of a business trip to enjoy the destination with friends and family. The advantage is simply that the trip and part of the stay are covered by the company. How to turn a business trip into a holiday or combining business with pleasure.

Staycation, another newborn in the world of tourism, appeared in 2017. Another contraction of two English words, "stay" and "vacation",** which could be **translated as staying on holiday... In short, it is the act of looking for accommodation in your city. Staycation is close to the philosophy of slow tourism and micro tourism. Spend less, pay less, don't spend hours in transport... and enjoy the beauty of your city, that you can sometimes forget out of habit. The idea is of course to go away for a short period, a weekend for example, and benefit from an attractive rate, when a nearby hotel is not fully booked for example. The advantage: your great flexibility, of course, to get there.
